The Classics

Here are some true masterpieces of literature. I know, the word "classics" brings to mind dusty old boring books that your grandparents read in school when they were your age. But I promise that you'll like these books. They're not only really entertaining, they'll also make you think -- and you can learn a lot about superb writing from them, too. I hope you'll give them a try.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
by Harper Lee
Warner Books, $5.95

I was assigned to read this book in English class, and it turned out to be one of the best assignments I ever received. TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD turned out to be a story that will stay with me forver. It is one of my favorite books of all time, and I recommend it to everyone looking for a wonderful read, as well as writers searching for an extremely well-written story to learn from.

This is an unforgettable novel about a childhood in a sleepy Southern town and the crisis of conscience that rocked it. Compassionate, dramatic, and deeply moving, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD takes readers to the roots of human behavior -- to innocence and experience, kindness and cruelty, love and hatred, humor and pathos. Harper Lee always considered her book to be a simple love story. Today it is regarded as a masterpiece of American literature.

THE CATCHER IN THE RYE
by J.D. Salinger
Little, Brown Books, $5.99

Salinger's literary masterpiece tells the story of a young boy named Holden and his coming-to-terms with himself. Told through Holden's eyes, this book is by turns sarcastic, witty, humorous, insightful, and heart-wrenchingly poignant. Nothing I say here can do it justice -- you just have to go out and read it for yourself. Simply put, THE CATCHER IN THE RYE is one of those rare books that you could read every day and never grow tired of, and that -- whether you read it a hundred times or just once -- will stay with you forever
